How to choose men's underwear: the complete guide
Most men have been wearing the same underwear for years. Not out of conviction, but out of habit. You buy what you know, you recognize the brand on the label, and you move on.
This guide is not a list of products to buy. It's a method for choosing — once and for all — what you wear closest to your body, all day long.
1. Material: The criterion most people underestimate
Underwear is in constant contact with the skin. For 16 hours a day, on average. The material is therefore not an aesthetic detail — it's a functional parameter.
Organic cotton remains the standard for everyday wear. Its natural breathability, all-season comfort, and softness on sensitive skin make it the most universal choice. Provided you opt for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, which guarantees the absence of chemical residues — particularly important for an item worn in prolonged contact with sensitive areas.
Lyocell (Lenzing™ ECOVERO or Tencel™) is the rising material. Made from wood pulp, it offers superior thermal regulation to cotton and an exceptional feel. Recommended for men with reactive skin, or for those seeking an extra level of comfort.
Polyester and synthetics: reserved for sports. Their moisture-wicking capacity is useful during exercise, but their breathability is insufficient for prolonged sedentary use.
2. Cut: How your body shape changes the equation
There is no universal cut. There are cuts adapted to specific uses, body shapes, and preferences.
Briefs: maximum support, reduced surface area. Recommended for physical activities, rather slender body shapes, or as a preferred item if you prioritize freedom of movement for your thighs.
Trunks: the most versatile cut. Halfway between briefs and boxers, they cover the buttocks without extending down the thigh. Suitable for the vast majority of body shapes.
Boxer shorts: more coverage, generally appreciated for their freedom of movement. However, beware: poorly designed boxer shorts can create friction on the inner thigh and offer no support. What you gain in coverage, you sometimes lose in comfort.
Jockstrap: maximum anatomical support with a dorsal opening. Ideal for intense physical exertion, often also favored for office comfort by men who appreciate firm support.
3. Anatomical support: The dimension the industry has long ignored
The cut and material are not enough if the design ignores male anatomy. This is precisely the problem solved by the FrontNest® system developed by AKINOM.
Standard underwear places the frontal area flat against the body. Result: compression, heat, constant readjustments. It's not a question of size — it's a question of design.
The FrontNest® creates a 3D anatomical pouch that accommodates the natural volume without compressing it. The internal separation eliminates skin-on-skin friction. Heat dissipates naturally. Whether sitting or moving, discomfort disappears.
This is not a marketing gimmick. It's a response to a real problem that most men have come to accept as normal — and which it is not.
4. Size: How to avoid the most common mistake
Underwear sizing is not universal from one brand to another. An M in one brand may correspond to an L in another. Absolute rule: always refer to the brand's size guide, using waist circumference in centimeters, not the generic size label.
Underwear that is too tight compresses, irritates, and deforms. Too loose, it offers no support and rides up. The right underwear is the one you forget you're wearing.
AKINOM offers sizes from XS to 5XL with a detailed guide available on each product page.
5. Replacement Frequency
Quality underwear lasts between 18 and 36 months with proper care. Below that, either the material is insufficient, or the care is inadequate.
Signs of replacement: stretched elastic, thinned or pilled fabric in friction areas, loss of shape or color. Worn-out underwear no longer provides support — and what you save by extending its life, you pay for in daily comfort.
What consumer studies confirm
Kantar analyses of male purchasing behavior are clear: men over 30 are gradually migrating to premium not for aesthetics, but for real use. The promise is no longer "what it looks like" — it's "what it feels like".
Underwear is the first garment you put on in the morning. If you spend your day readjusting or enduring discomfort you've learned to ignore, you may simply have the wrong product — not the wrong body type.
